Exploring Through The Lens: Patcha Kitchaicharoen

Patcha Kitchaicharoen is a Thai artist now based in Los Angeles, who has an eye for unique compositions, vivid color palettes, distinctive lighting techniques; along with her passion for food photography and storytelling.

“Before 2016, I was a jack-of-all-trades photographer, capturing everything from fashion to weddings,” she reminisces. “However, it wasn’t until I attended the International Center of Photography (ICP) in NYC that I truly discovered my passion.” Amidst the streets of New York City, she learned to infuse her emotions and memories into her photographs, and here is also where she found her deep connection to culinary arts. “Growing up in Thailand, a country renowned as a food paradise, it’s impossible not to become a food enthusiast.” This epiphany sparked a connection between photography and food, “Now, whenever I see food, I don't just see something to eat; I see an opportunity to create art that tells a story and evokes emotions.”

Patcha’s work is driven by her belief in the power of storytelling. Not just her unique perspective on still life, she also delves into the narrative of every plate when she photographs food. “To me, food photography isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about honoring the journey that brought that dish to life,” she emphasizes. Her images are not just pretty food on a pretty plate, it’s the eating customs, cultures, unique qualities, and its ‘soul’ that are emphasized rather than just superficial aesthetics. Through her lens, she doesn’t just capture food; she tells a story and if you look closely her sense of humor seeps right through the images. “I believe that when you approach food photography with the same level of passion and dedication as you would any other genre, you can create images that stand out and leave a lasting impression.”
