“Xmas Vindaloo” by Brice Dossin
Brice Dossin is a French photographer who is fascinated by “unexpected juxtaposition, the cacophony, and unique places.” There’s no place that fit the description more than Goa, India.
“I went to Goa as a tourist and I remembered it as a joyful mess.” His project “Xmas Vindaloo’ is where he captured unexpected scenes of Goa; where modernized world meets old traditions. “It was my first Christmas in tropical weather, so it felt like a parallel world, having all these Christmas decorations, techno parties and hippy-looking tourists, under the heat of perfect weather.” His photos are flash-lit, vivid and merrymaking (pun intended). “I’m mostly interested in our society of mass consumption, its excesses and frivolity. This is why I use the flash, it makes colors pop like in a commercial.” Nevertheless, his project celebrates a way of life and how globalization has affected different places. His work emphasizes how clashes between cultures can create such unique experiences; an unexpected aspect of Goa that people might not see coming. “I’m creating my own little world which is like a bubble, populated by bigger than life characters, a strange but peaceful place that helps me cope with a lot of the nonsenses and harsh aspects of this world.”
