“Past Away” by Oho Kanako
Selected project from ONAEBA 2020, ‘Past Away.’ Oho Kanako is a Kanakawa born, Japanese photographer. The project portrays emotional states of ‘a mother’ towards her second son’s illness.
“This project is a record of my life with my children. I chose the photos by focusing on my second son’s illness and suffering as a mother.” ‘Past away,’ as glooming as it sounds, the title is meant to create a sense of hope that past sufferings will soon be gone. “At first, I worked on the theme of “motherhood” , but I decided to change the title.”
She meant for her project to be as a prayer for world’s sufferings during Corona virus pandemic that glimmer of hope will guide us through; all suffering will pass us by. Kanako chose black and white prints for the project, which fit flawlessly to the raw feelings of both anxiety, sadness and a mother’s love which sometimes is painful yet genuine and tender. Her project is a love letter to her children beautifully portrays through film, which she developed herself during the pandemic outbreak. “When you learn to have hope and also have fun, past suffering will eventually passed away. I would be so happy if I can get my message across.”
