“China 555” by Lao Xie Xie
"Men think about sex 19 times a day and women about 10 time. I'm the addition of both. Sex for me is something always present in my life and I think people don’t need to be ashame of it and make it part of their daily life. It is not my intention to provoke anyone. I just want to express myslef."
Lao Xie Xie an artist/photographer from Shanghai, China; to him photography is merely a medium in which he uses to convey his ideas. His project “CHINA 555” (in Thai means laughing, but in Chinese means crying) digs deep into the youth culture, which collides with the traditional culture in China.
The idea of sex for many Asian cultures are considered provocative, foul and sinful. However, Lao Xie Xie seen it as something prominent in his life and that young people shouldn’t be ashamed of it. His work is rough, messy but truthful. The element of human physique creates a strong visual impact unlike in the renaissance paintings, his work is straightforward, urban, punk filled with references to youth cultures. His message is clear, “I shoot what I want and what satisfies me, if people like it, cool, if not, too bad.”
Project “CHINA 555” is exhibited in Bangkok, Thailand at Green Lantern Gallery for more information please check
